Workshop #7: Digitally Enabled Temporary Work Zones
Technology is changing the way temporary work zones are managed and maintained. Through the use of smart connected products (creating a digital twin) it is possible to monitor any type of safety critical asset 24/7 and only intervene when necessary. This new approach improves safety, radically reducing carbon emissions and unnecessary vehicle movements. It also enables real-time alerts to be sent to oncoming vehicles further preventing any potential crashes whilst being able to warn workers when vehicles breach the work zone. Further developments include the use of real-time work zone data to inform upcoming road users thereby preventing incidents and improving traffic flow. A more harmonized approach will result in creating smart temporary work zones that minimize crashes, reduce delays and carbon emissions.
This roundtable discussion will explore the role of smart connected technology in modern work zone management. The session will begin with a collaborative discussion on the current and potential benefits of smart connected products in temporary work zones. Participants will share insights and experiences on how this technology can improve safety, data accuracy, and sustainability. The second part of the session will utilize breakout groups to focus on future developments including what types of connected equipment are needed in work zones, how the connected equipment can be integrated into a traffic management system and other best practices. Each breakout group will report back with key takeaways and recommendations, fostering a shared understanding of how to advance smart work zone practices across the industry.
