1st International Workshop of TC 2.4 – The Role of new technologies and digital transformation in Road Network Operations
Digital technologies are changing the way people move and behave. The mobility ecosystem is more and more based on digital services and on demand and integrated transport. Addressing the digital transformation concept to road network operations can support road agencies during the design and implementation of such projects, thanks to the reference and best practices that PIARC collects around the world. The World Road Association (PIARC), the world leader in the exchange of knowledge on roads and road transport policy and practices and its Technical Committee 2.4 on Road Network Operations and ITS for Sustainability (TC 2.4) will present the audience with the results from its work as a committee while it will also share experiences coming from its experts from all around the world. Road safety and user-centric design of operations are topics that are high on the PIARC agenda.
Participants registered for the full conference or holding a one-day pass for Monday are welcome to attend the workshop.
AGENDA:
| 09:00 – 09:30 | Introductory session Welcome by PIARC President Introduction to the International Workshop |
| 09:30 – 11:15 | As road transport is a crucial component of modern infrastructure, leveraging digital technologies can enhance service delivery, efficiency, safety, and sustainability for road users. This session aims to provide attendees with a comprehensive understanding of the critical role of digitalization in road transport. It will underscore both the challenges that need addressing and the myriad of opportunities available to enhance services for road users. By bringing together experts from diverse fields, the session promises to foster a collaborative environment for innovation and progress. |
| 11:15 – 11:30 | Coffee Break |
| 11:30 – 13:20 | Session 2: Traffic Management & Road Safety in Africa The African continent accounts for 24 percent of global road fatalities despite hosting less than 4 percent of the world’s vehicles. The very high rate of Injuries and deaths is intrinsically linked to a series of chronic inefficiencies, such as lack of unsuitable road infrastructure, vehicle standards and training, post-crash response systems, but also traffic Management. Road safety management practices in Africa cover risk prevention, road infrastructure planning, strategic traffic congestion management plans, including optimizing traffic signal timings and applying also innovative solutions and making use of locally adapted carpooling incentives and smart mobility. The Session will delve into key gaps and their causes as well as analysis of road traffic management patterns while it will discuss country -specific use cases, the roles of different stakeholders and current and future actions in field of traffic and road management, that can bring change and enhance road safety and implementation strategies across Africa. |
| 13:20 – 14:30 | Lunch Break |
| 14:30 – 16:00 | As the global community faces escalating environmental challenges, the focus on sustainable practices has never been more critical. Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) hold immense potential in advancing sustainability efforts, particularly in the realms of decarbonization and ensuring equitable social impact. This session aims to provide attendees with a comprehensive understanding of how Intelligent Transportation Systems can bolster sustainability efforts. By focusing on decarbonization and fair social impact, it seeks to promote a balanced and equitable approach to environmental challenges. Bringing together experts and stakeholders from various fields, the session promises to foster innovative strategies and collaborative pathways for a greener and more sustainable future for road transport. |
| 16:00 – 17:00 | The dynamic evolution of road network operations and traffic management is pivotal in shaping efficient, safe, and sustainable mobility. This round table session invites participants to explore the intersection of technical insights and forward-looking strategies. By leveraging international experiences, the discussion aims to uncover valuable lessons and innovative approaches that can guide future advancements in road network operations and traffic management. It also seeks to bridge the gap between past experiences and future innovations. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of how technical knowledge can ehnance future advancements, ultimately contributing to efficient and sustainable transportation systems worldwide. |
| 17:00 – 17:30 | Closing session |
