Technical Visit: Nea Attiki Odos

The technical visit to Nea Attiki Odos will offer participants a firsthand look at its advanced traffic management operations. The visit includes a presentation, a guided tour of the Traffic Management Center (TMC), and an exploration of the maintenance yard.

NEA ATTIKI ODOS
Attiki Odos is a state-of-the-art tollway in Athens, Greece. It serves as a critical infrastructure project, designed to alleviate traffic congestion in the Attica region. The tollway has a centerline length of 70 kilometers, forming a ring road around Athens, while integrating with the broader national and road network. The project, completed in 2004 ahead of the Athens Olympic Games, was developed through a public-private partnership (PPP). It involved the Greek State and a consortium of private investors, operating under a concession agreement. Recently the project has entered its second 25 year concession agreement with a new Concessionaire (“TERNA”) and a new name “Nea Attiki Odos”.

Attiki Odos is equipped with advanced Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) including:

  1. 300+ cameras that provide real-time surveillance across the motorway for effective incident detection and response,
  2. 100+ Variable Message Signs (VMS) positioned in the entries and strategically along the mainline, that display real-time traffic updates, speed limits, and warnings,
  3. Emergency Roadside Telephones (ERTs): Located every 50 meters in tunnels and every 2 kilometers on the open road, enabling immediate communication with the Traffic Management Center (TMC).
  4. Weather Monitoring Stations: These measure conditions such as temperature, humidity, and wind, ensuring timely alerts for adverse weather.
  5. Electronic Toll Collection: The “e-PASS” system facilitates seamless, contactless toll transactions for users.

All ITS equipment is integrated with the TMC, which operates 24/7, ensuring real-time coordination, rapid incident management, and enhanced traveler safety across the tollway.

Besides the aforementioned equipment, the Attiki Odos Operator (“Nea Attiki Odos Operation”) relies also on the human factor, its experienced and well trained personnel that monitors traffic from the TMC and also patrols with special purpose patrol vehicles along the road, managing approximately 100 incidents (mostly vehicle breakdowns) on a busy day.
