Workshop #6: Transitioning Between Human and Autonomous Driving- Remote Operation of Buses and Trucks on Freeways, Motorways and Tollways
Technology supporting the transition to partial or full-automated operation of buses and trucks continues to advance. Companies in North America, Europe and Asia are testing remote operation of trucks in the movement of freight, and fully automated operation of buses and trucks on selected routes, with and without drivers in place. For example, two U.S. companies located in Texas are testing automated tractor-trailer operation on U.S. freeways, traveling long-distance interstate roadways and major freight routes. Although trucks are operating in automated mode, drivers are on board and ready to assume manual operation of the vehicle, if needed. Although the rapidly developing automated vehicle technologies appear promising, the impact of partial or full-automated trucks and buses on freeway operations and freeway safety is not well understood. This workshop will explore the benefits, challenges, and impacts of remote and automated operation of buses and trucks on freeway operations.
